Engine Casting Deburr

A robotic Deburr cell is used to remove burr and flashing from aluminum engine block castings.

Castings are delivered to the cell in bins holding eighteen blocks. A vision system is used to locate each casting. A custom designed End-Of-Arm-Tool picks up and securely holds each casting regardless of stack level, rotation or tilt.

The robot moves the casting against a stationary pneumatic cutting tool to remove flashing. The helical cutting tool is mounted on a flex coupling to prevent damage from hard contact with the casting.

A second milling tool is used to remove flaws left by a worn or damaged die. Each casting (thus its die) is identified by a serial number read by a second vision system camera.

Robotic deburring requires subtle and accurate control of robot movement.
